Enjoying the view of the Yosemite Valley from the summit of Clouds Rest

By far the most unforgettable day hike, through quiet pine forests, across exposed granite, and onto one of Yosemite National Park’s most spectacular summits.

There are hikes that challenge your legs, hikes that test your endurance, and hikes that leave you standing still for hours because the view in front of you is almost too incredible to be true . Hiking Clouds Rest in Yosemite National Park manages to do all three.

At 9,926 feet above sea level, Clouds Rest offers a perspective of Yosemite that feels different from almost anywhere else in the park. From its granite summit, Half Dome appears almost within reach, Yosemite Valley stretches into the distance, and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains seem to continue forever.

We spent a Friday night getting closer to the trailhead, woke up early the next morning, and set out for a full day in the mountains. What followed was a beautiful forest hike, a few demanding uphill sections, a thrilling final approach to the summit, and unforgettable hours taking in the views at the summit.

Getting closer to the trailhead and early start

One of the best decisions we made was driving into the Yosemite area on Friday evening rather than attempting an early-morning drive from home on the day of the hike.

We stayed at Yosemite West Gate Lodge, which was approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from our trailhead. The trailhead is along Tioga Road near Tenaya Lake, at an elevation of roughly 8,150 feet, beautiful views welcome you with the sunrise along this road. Tribe was at the trailhead by 7:00 AM, managed to have a quick breakfast and kicked off the day.

The trail: A beautiful walk through Yosemite's forests

One of the things we loved most about this hike was how much of the early and middle sections took us through beautiful woodland. The trail winds through pine forests, with patches of sunlight falling across the path and granite appearing between the trees. The trail starts off rather flat before a steep uphill section, giving you time to settle into the walk, enjoy the scenery, listen to the sounds of the birds , and gradually work your way toward the tougher sections of the hike.

The terrain changes as you go. Some portions feel relatively gentle, while others require a sustained uphill effort. The elevation can make the climbing feel more demanding than it would at a lower altitude, particularly if you're not accustomed to hiking above 8,000 feet.

We found that keeping a steady pace was far more enjoyable than trying to cover the ground quickly. There is no prize for reaching the summit exhausted.

Clouds Rest is a well-known hiking destination and well maintained trail, but it is still important to pay attention to trail signs. There are at least two major junctions along the way where you need to check your direction. Several trails share this part of Yosemite's high country, including routes toward Sunrise Lakes and other destinations. Tribe always has offline AllTrails maps to guide us.

Fall fresh air of the forest, warmth of the sun and those expansive views will be worth every uphill on this trail .

The final climb: When the landscape changes

As you get closer to Clouds Rest, the character of the hike is rather dramatic. The forest gradually gives way to more open terrain, and the final uphill section wwith exposed granite comes into view. The granite landscape feels bigger, the views begin to open up, and the summit starts to feel tantalizingly close.

This is where you begin to understand why Clouds Rest has such a reputation. The last climb is not just about fitness. It requires concentration, sure footing, and a willingness to take your time. On the final ascent you will be walking over uneven granite and navigating a narrower, more exposed section of trail.

An important safety tip for the final ascent

As you approach the steep granite face and summit ridge, stay on the established trail, watch your footing, and give yourself plenty of room away from exposed edges.

On our hike, we found it important to favor the left side of the uphill approach rather than drifting toward the right, where there are few hundred feet of drop-offs.

The exposure can feel intimidating, particularly if you're uncomfortable with heights. The terrain is not something to rush through for a photograph. Move deliberately, keep your attention on the trail, and allow other hikers enough room to pass safely. If the granite is wet, icy, or slippery, or if thunderstorms are approaching, do not attempt the exposed summit ridge.

Clouds Rest is an incredible destination, but getting there and back safely is always more important than reaching the top.

The summit: The views are worth every step

As you approach the summit, the first thing that strikes you is the sheer scale of the landscape.

The view opens in every direction, revealing a panorama of granite formations, forested slopes, deep canyons, and distant mountain peaks. Half Dome stands out dramatically along the surrounding wilderness.

Below you, Tenaya Canyon cuts through the granite landscape. In the distance, the high country stretches toward the horizon, and the familiar landmarks of Yosemite seem to fit together like pieces of an enormous natural puzzle. Clouds Rest rises to 9,926 feet, placing its summit roughly 1,000 feet above Half Dome's summit.

Our favorite part of the day was the two hours at the summit. We took time to appreciate the scenery, look across the mountains, have lunch, and enjoy a well-earned break after the climb. Even on a warm day, the summit can be windy and noticeably cooler than the sheltered forest below. Be mindful of where you sit and stand. The exposed granite and steep edges are part of what makes Clouds Rest so dramatic, but they also deserve respect. Keep a safe distance from drop-offs, avoid unstable rocks, and never put yourself in a risky position for a photograph.

For outdoor enthusiasts who love full-day hikes, big mountain views, and the feeling of being immersed in nature, it is hard not to fall in love with this trail. Also remember there is good amount of uphill on the way back, so keep your energy and fuels alive for the way back. Water sources at this time of year in fall are limited so ensure you carry at least 2-3 liters on you and use accordingly so it lasts you the entire way back.

Clouds Rest is one of those Yosemite hikes that stays with you long after your legs have recovered

Do not go off-trail, there is significant danger if you happen to get to a unstable rock or section with sharp drop-offs, which there are many off here.

The summit views are among the most spectacular we've experienced in Yosemite, especially the perspective of Half Dome rising above the vast landscape below. It is the sort of place that reminds you why you put on hiking boots, wake up before sunrise, and spend an entire day outdoors. Clouds Rest is challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment, but the reward is a view that makes you want to stay a little longer.
